An examination of the growth and development of modern Russia from the era of the Great Reforms (1861) to the present with special attention to culture and politics. The course focuses on the development of Russia and its political, social, cultural, and intellectual effects; the rise and fall of the Russian Empire; the rise and fall of the Soviet Union; and the development of current political and cultural conflicts in Russia and the other CIS countries.
