A survey of Russian history from Ivan the Terrible (1547-84) to the present, with special attention to culture and politics. The course focuses on the development of Russia and its political, social, cultural, and intellectual effects; the rise and fall of the Russian Empire; the rise and fall of the Soviet Union; and the development of current political and cultural conflicts in Russia and the other CIS countries.
